Health & Safety Works has extensive expertise in the specialist areas of Laboratory and Hi-Tech safety particularly within the Biotechnology field, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations (CoSHH), Radioisotope, Nano-materials and DSEAR Safety. With practical experience developed over a career of working within laboratories our Director, David Oates has worked with the relevant Health and Safety Regulations since they were first introduced in 1988 when he implemented the Control of Substances Regulations within Cambridge University for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund.
Further laboratory health and safety work has been undertaken for the Cancer Research Council, Sanger Centre, Cambridge Consultants, Horse Racing Forensic Laboratories, Astex Therapeutics, Argenta, Aixtron, Illumina, Bank of England, Inivata, Agenus, MRC and Dermal Laboratories.
The CoSHH regulations are still a challenge for many companies and Health & Safety Works can offer practical advice and consultancy developing Risk Assessments for all types of CoSHH requirements for example pharmaceutical companies ,chemical synthesis businesses, Pharma Manufacture and construction industry relating to both usage and storage.
Particular expertise has been gained working with biological agents and biosafety with specific experience of DNA repair, Human Papilloma virus research, Mapping the Human genome, HIV Genotyping and Phenotyping, Retrovirus work with pigs. Health & Safety Works can act as a Biological Safety Officer to compile and submit all the necessary forms and develop documentation for up to Category 3 research facilities.
Further experience gained at Cambridge University and The Sanger Centre has developed our expertise with establishing laboratory procedures for the control of radioisotopes in laboratories.
Health & Safety Works has also undertaken many risk assessments and procedures for laboratories and warehouses, all with flammable storage facilities in accordance with the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR).
As well as consultancy we also offer bespoke training courses on laboratory safety, biological agents, spillage and DSEAR.

Following the sad death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, we will be closing on September 19th in line with the announced bank holiday, for her majestys funeral. We will be working as normal on Tuesday. Thank you for your service ma'am.

2019 - 2020 observed 55% of all lost working days attributed to work related mental ill health. Workload, lack of support, violence, threats or bullying and changes at work are estimated to be the main causes of work-related stress, depression or anxiety based on 2009/10-2011/12 LFS data. This shows a marked increase over previous years.
